Homeopathy and acupuncture
While classical homeopathy is strictly concerned with the field's guiding principle the "law of similiars" where like cures like some homeopathic practitioners employ a wider scope of homeopathy that often includes acupuncture.
Unlike homeopathy, which was discovered by a German physician approximately 200 years ago, acupuncture is an ancient form of traditional Chinese medicine that has been used for more than 2,500 years.
Both homeopathy and acupuncture aim to restore a person's natural state of homeostasis, or vital energy. As such, these practices are often used in combination to treat a wide range of medical conditions. The categories of conditions that can be treated by either classical homeopathy, acupuncture, or through a combination of the two include:
    Physical pain
    Psychological pain
    Neurological pain
In classical homeopathy as is the case in acupuncture, the stimulation of the body's natural healing process is the goal. Classical homeopathic remedies, however, entail ingesting substances that have been specifically designed for the symptoms of the individual patient.
Homeopathic remedies have a special characteristic: they are made from highly diluted plant, animal or mineral substances that would provoke a healthy person to suffer from similar symptoms as those that the patient is currently experiencing. Hence, the "law of similars" that states that like cures like.
The belief behind the practise of acupuncture is that one's energy must be balanced and it must be free-flowing. This means that if a person is suffering from any kind of discomfort, his or her energy is not in a state of equilibrium. In order to simulate energy that flows freely throughout the body, acupuncturists use needles that are strategically-positioned along energy pathways that seek to restore a person's ideal flow of energies.
In the practice of acupuncture, the actual technique involves trained practitioners inserting solid needles that are as thin as a strand of hair into the skin at specific touch points. These points known as "acupoints" are specific locations on the body that are stimulated by the acupuncture needles. These acupoints are activated through touch and they encourage the body's natural healing process to take place.
There are more than 400 different acupoints on the human body. The stimulation of each one encourages specific functions that treat:
    Migraine headaches
    Allergies
    Back pain
    Infertility
    Stress
    Anxiety
    Arthritis
    High blood pressure
While both acupuncture and homeopathy belong to the realm of alternative medicine, they have gradually been making their way into mainstream society. Today, people are using these types of medicine not only for themselves but also for their children, as well as for the animals that are part of the household.
However, just as many people embrace homeopathy and the related practice of acupuncture, there are the naysayers. Critics tend to cite the lack of hard, scientific evidence when it comes to alternative medicine. They say that many of the successes of homeopathic remedies and acupuncture sessions are nothing more than the placebo effect, or the power of positive thinking.
Naysayers or not, the acceptance of homeopathy and acupuncture is on the rise.
